When my grandmother went into a nursing home a few years ago and no longer had a place to cook or the ability, I thought I’d never again taste her savory, smoky, perfect Brunswick Stew. One of my oldest food memories is the taste of that stew that consisted of smoked pork and beef, peas, corn, tomatoes, and other vegetables and secret ingredients that were slow cooked till they were my favorite feel good meal. Neighbors and friends raved about the stew that she would make in a pot big enough to bathe a small child. Because I loved this dish so much and she always had a bowl waiting for me or a frozen bag ready to send home with me, I secretly thought she made it just for me.

I would often order Brunswick stew in restaurants but it never stacked up to my Granny’s so I stopped ordering it all together and had finally come to the conclusion that her stew was lost to me forever. Recently when my uncle Wendell and I were reminiscing and discussing potential food stories we came to the conclusion that we had to figure out how to make Granny’s stew. Correction…. he would figure it out and I would document the dish through photography :)  I’m now happy to report that Wendell has made a stew that taste’s just like my granny’s. I could cry just thinking about this discovery. But why cry when there is a perfect bowl of stew sitting in front of you ready to be savored and sweet memories ready to be awakened by the taste of perfection.

Enjoy the images and please go to the following link to read Wendell’s story which also includes his own very delicious recipe for coleslaw and Virginia Willis‘ jalapeno and cheddar cornbread recipe.
