The First week of my trip was spent in Santiago Chile where I celebrated my 28th birthday!

A beautiful sunrise greeted us on our flight to Santiago.

Yerba Loca, national park

The little car I rented made it’s way up switchbacks and rocky dirt roads.

One of the first stops in Santiago was the central market where booths of fresh seafood great the nostrils of visitors. I dinned at one of the many restaurants inside… ordered the Picorocos, the worlds only edible barnacles, and quickly traded them for empanadas.

After lunch we took a funicular to the top of Cerro San Cristobal. The top of the hill has an amazing view of the city and is the base of a massive statue of the Virgin Mary.

Stray dogs are absolutely everywhere.

Flying from Atlanta to South America took me from Spring to another favorite season, Fall.

For my birthday I spent the day at a lodge in the foothills of the Andes where we went horseback riding.

My ride was a gentle blue eyed horse named Satan.

A pastel sketch by Jennifer Keim.

Jennifer Keim takes a moment to sketch the beautiful scenery.

The next set of images are from Thursday April 23rd. I along with two friends drove into the mountains and hiked 5km to a glacier. An amazing experience! Much thanks goes to our Swiss guide Reito (I’ll add his information for those traveling to Chile and in need of a great guide)

Admittedly this is a terrible photo of us but the scenery is amazing and shows us at the start of our hike.

Water, rich with minerals, bubbles up from the mountains turning the rocks red.

Three quarters of the way to our destination we stop at a laguna for lunch and a rest.

I wish I could post a larger image because a very tiny bird is shown here perched on our guides backpack.

Kat, Laura and I had come such a long way and insisted that we actually touch the ice of the glacier. We also had the opportunity to drink from the stream at the mouth of the glacier.

We made it! I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to spend the day with. This was probably my favorite experience from our trip.
