Faith and Friendship

posted in On Assignment 07.06.2008

The images below, from a weekly religion assignment, were taken at Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta. The Sunday morning that I shot these images the church was welcoming their new pastor, Rev. Dr. Timothy Boddie. Boddie is one of only 6 pastors to preside at the church.

Friendship was organized in 1866 and is Atlanta’s first black Baptist independent congregation. Originally the church could not buy property and first worshipped in a boxcar.

The light in the church is amazing! Below are my favorite images.

I love this look of being caught…

I once hated when people looked at me when I was taking their picture but sometimes it works and I love this man and his warm smile.

I love the next two images of this sleeping girl…. the glasses on her forehead, her body language and the light really make this image special (for me at least).

Georges

posted in Food, On Assignment 07.06.2008

Ah…comfort food! I love any restaurant that makes me feel a little nostalgic and where I can comfortably lick my fingers. These images are from a cuisine assignment shot at Georges Grill and BBQ.

Growing up my grandmother would make large bubbling vats of smokey brunswick stew. I remember licking my lips, as she placed all of the ingredients into the massive pot on the stove.
I wish I knew her recipe, though I don’t think she could tell me because it was never made the same way twice or with any concern for measurement… but always delicious. I’ve sampled many different versions of the stew but of course hers is always the best (sorry George).

Butterflies and a Boy

posted in On Assignment 07.06.2008

What’s not to like about butterflies? I recently shot a fundraiser at the Dunwoody Nature Center called Monarchs and Margaritas. During the event patrons had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the colorful insects, provided by Greathouse Butterfly Farm, in a special tent containing vibrant flowers.

Below I’ve posted a few of my favorite images.

A woman and a butterfly make eye contact…

While another one of the insects rests in a ponytail.

I couldn’t resist posting this photo from another recent assignment as well. This image is from a children’s music camp where kids are introduced to a plethora of instruments. This little boy looks so angelic with the pint sized harp he’s plucking. I love the one little finger pulling the string with curiosity.
